NuGrow sent thousands of Green Heart Fair goers home with a small reminder of the power of recycling on 29 May, giving away more than 2,000 mini packets of potting mix made from NuGrow’s own composted organics.
The NuGrow team sponsored the fair and hosted a stand for the day to help raise awareness of the importance of diverting some of the waste currently going to landfill to alternative beneficial uses.
The fair, which attracted record numbers, featured more than 100 of Brisbane’s leading sustainability organisations, community groups, artisans, foodies, green thumbs, conservationists and business and eco experts – the perfect fit for NuGrow as Queensland’s largest composter.
The team used the day to launch its new potting mix brand, NuPurpose, while also collecting all of the organic waste generated at the fair in specially-marked bins for future recycling into compost.
NuGrow Head of Environment, Governance and Business Excellence, Peter Thompson, said the team’s primary objective was giving people a practical insight into the benefits organic waste offers in creating useful by-products.
“We find that a lot of people understand the general idea of recycling but are surprised when we show them how we can transform a bucket of food scraps, green waste and other organics, over time, into something like a high-quality compost,” Peter said.
“When people learn – and see – that this sort of advanced recycling is happening right now, in their own state, it’s something they get excited about,” he said.
“The Green Heart Fair was another excellent opportunity for our team to educate community members about environmental sustainability and help them see that actions such as waste separation and recycling can have significant, positive impact for our communities.”
The NuGrow team shared with both the public and government representatives about the waste industry in Queensland and the huge opportunities to take recycling further and wider.
NuGrow’s NuPurpose – a premium potting mix created from 100 per cent recycled green waste – received excellent feedback and is now available in several leading nurseries. The organic waste collected at the fair will ultimately be recycled into future NuPurpose potting mix production.
